For 60-plus years this author has focused on gathering inspiring thoughts, poems, and scripture. He then organized and included them into books condensed for quick and easy reading for both youth and adults all while maintaining the well documented original text scripture and all. The books in the following pages represent his work.
Jesus Christ Lives: “So Great was the Astonishment of the People!” is a singular, complete, and purely scriptural account not only of Jesus’ earthly recorded life and teachings among mankind in the land of Jerusalem, but also his resurrected ministry among righteous inhabitants in Ancient America. It is taken from the best of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John’s accounts in the King James Version of the Holy Bible, as well as from the account given in Third Nephi of the Book of Mormon.
By removing unrelated material and complexity, a reader may get a more basic, clear, yet still comprehensive overview of Jesus’ life and teachings among the people who knew him, and recorded their experiences with him in the Biblical account. In the Book of Mormon is the pure, unaltered account of the resurrected Lord’s ministry among the Nephites.
Instead of four partial accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the Holy Bible, this book presents a single story of their accounts, followed by the account of the Savior’s Ancient American ministry. The book includes an index and marking system which makes easily available the events, sermons, parables, and miracles recorded in the Biblical section.
Jesus Christ Lives: “So Great was the Astonishment of the People!” gathers in simplicity for youth, as well as adults, the Savior’s teachings, wisdom and Spirit in these two ministries.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Jesus Christ Lives: “So Great was the Astonishment of the People”! is a modest but genuine attempt to present from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the New Testament the complete recorded story of Christ’s ministry among a challenging mix of people in the land of Jerusalem. The book also includes the marvelous record of Christ’s prophesied ministry to some of his “other sheep” which he visited in Ancient America after his resurrection. Christ’s ministry on earth is considered by countless people as the greatest story ever told. Understandably then, this powerful and far-reaching message merits corresponding clarity and ease of access.
This book is written in a fresh, comprehensive, singular and seamless format. The need for such a work as this has many components, as evidenced from the vast differences and confusion among and between countless sects in Christianity; for while the four Biblical accounts provide a sacred and revered basis for the faith of hundreds of millions, a person cannot go to the Bible for a single, complete and flowing account of the Savior’s recorded ministry. Furthermore, each of the four Biblical accounts vary somewhat from each other, are somewhat mosaic accounts, and were written at different times and from individual perspectives.
With a varied background of challenges, not unlike putting pieces of a critical and complex puzzle together, this book takes a significant risk in fitting together a careful selection of what is felt to be the more familiar and reputable wording, phrases and accounts that comprise Christ’s life and ministries in the given books.
This book is presented in a familiar reader-friendly format, is entirely faithful to the original King James Bible version and Book of Mormon wording, and provides consistent and comprehensive documentation throughout. Christ’s major sermons, miracles, and parables are also identified and placed at a reader’s fingertips with accompanying appendices.
Perhaps the most significant, inspiring and touching part of the entire book is the account of the resurrected Savior’s marvelous visit and ministry over several days among a multitude of righteous migrant Israelites in Ancient America—an account preserved on ancient metallic plates, and miraculously brought forth in these modern times. “Other Sheep I Have”
I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. John 10:14-16
from Jesus’ Trial
Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. Matthew 27: 22-23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. Luke 23:23
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Matthew 27:24
Barabbas is Released; Jesus Is Delivered for Crucifixion
And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. And he released unto them (Barabbas) that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will. Luke 23:24-25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.…and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. Matthew 27:25-26
Jesus Is Mocked and Whipped
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall (called Praetorium Mark 15:16), and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, king of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. (and they smote him with their hands. John 19:3), Matthew 27:27-30
Jesus’ Introduction in Ancient America
Behold, I have come unto the world to bring redemption unto the world, to save the world from sin. Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved. 3 Nephi 9:21-22
Jesus Appears to an Astonished People
And now behold, it came to pass that all the people of the land did hear these sayings, and did witness of it. And after these sayings there was silence in the land for the space of many hours; For so great was the astonishment of the people that they did cease lamenting and howling for the loss of their kindred which had been slain; therefore there was silence in all the land for the space of many hours. And it came to pass that there came a voice again unto the people, and all the people did hear, and did witness of it…. 3 Nephi 10:1-3
“Ye are They of Whom I Said: Other Sheep I Have”
And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he said unto those twelve whom he had chosen: Ye are my disciples; and ye are a light unto this people, who are a remnant of the house of Joseph. And behold, this is the land of your inheritance; and the Father hath given it unto you. 3 Nephi 15:11-13
And not at any time hath the Father given me commandment that I should tell it unto your brethren at Jerusalem. Neither at any time hath the Father given me commandment that I should tell unto them concerning the other tribes of the house of Israel, whom the Father hath led away out of the land. This much did the Father command me, that I should tell unto them: That other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 3 Nephi 15:14-17
And now, because of stiffneckedness and unbelief they understood not my word; therefore I was commanded to say no more of the Father concerning this thing unto them. But, verily, I say unto you that the Father hath commanded me, and I tell it unto you, that ye were separated from among them because of their iniquity; therefore it is because of their iniquity that they know not of you. And verily, I say unto you again that the other tribes hath the Father separated from them; and it is because of their iniquity that they know not of them. 3 Nephi 15:18-20
And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. And they understood me not, for they supposed it had been the Gentiles; for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted through their preaching. And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice; and they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my voice—that I should not manifest myself unto them save it were by the Holy Ghost. But behold, ye have both heard my voice, and seen me; and ye are my sheep, and ye are numbered among those whom the Father hath given me. 3 Nephi 15:21-24
“And…I Have Other Sheep…Not of This Land,”
And verily, verily, I say unto you that I have other sheep, which are not of this land, neither of the land of Jerusalem, neither in any parts of that land round about whither I have been to minister. For they of whom I speak are they who have not as yet heard my voice; neither have I at any time manifested myself unto them. But I have received a commandment of the Father that I shall go unto them, and that they shall hear my voice, and shall be numbered among my sheep, that there may be one fold and one shepherd; therefore I go to show myself unto them. 3 Nephi 16:1-3
A TOUCHING MINISTRY
“Behold, My Bowels are Filled with Compassion Towards You”
And it came to pass that when Jesus had thus spoken, he cast his eyes round about again on the multitude, and beheld they were in tears, and did look steadfastly upon him as if they would ask him to tarry a little longer with them. And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you. Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels are filled with mercy. For I perceive that ye desire that I should show unto you what I have done unto your brethren at Jerusalem, for I see that your faith is sufficient that I should heal you. 3 Nephi 17:5-8
And it came to pass that when he had thus spoken, all the multitude, with one accord, did go forth with their sick and their afflicted, and their lame, and with their blind, and with their dumb, and with all them that were afflicted in any manner; and he did heal them every one as they were brought forth unto him. And they did all, both they who had been healed and they who were whole, bow down at his feet, and did worship him; and as many as could come for the multitude did kiss his feet, insomuch that they did bathe his feet with their tears. 3 Nephi 17:9-10
The Multitude is Commanded to Kneel As Christ Prays
And it came to pass that he commanded that their little children should be brought. So they brought their little children and set them down upon the ground round about him, and Jesus stood in the midst; and the multitude gave way till they had all been brought unto him. And it came to pass that when they had all been brought, and Jesus stood in the midst, he commanded the multitude that they should kneel down upon the ground. And it came to pass that when they had knelt upon the ground, Jesus groaned within himself, and said: Father, I am troubled because of the wickedness of the people of the house of Israel. And when he had said these words, he himself also knelt upon the earth; and behold he prayed unto the Father, and the things which he prayed cannot be written, and the multitude did bear record who heard him. 3 Nephi 17:11-15
And after this manner do they bear record: The eye hath never seen, neither hath the ear heard, before, so great and marvelous things as we saw and heard Jesus speak unto the Father; And no tongue can speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we both saw and heard Jesus speak; and no one can conceive of the joy which filled our souls at the time we heard him pray for us unto the Father. 3 Nephi 17:16-17
And it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of praying unto the Father, he arose; but so great was the joy of the multitude that they were overcome. And it came to pass that Jesus spake unto them, and bade them arise. And they arose from the earth, and he said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full. 3 Nephi 17:18-20
Angels Descend and Encircle the Children
And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them. And when he had done this he wept again; And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones. And as they looked to behold, they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them. And the multitude did see and hear and bear record; and they know that their record is true for they all of them did see and hear, every man for himself; and they were in number about two thousand and five hundred souls; and they did consist of men, women, and children. 3 Nephi 17:21-25

About the author
Sterling H. Redd Sr.
Sterling has had an identified interest in writing since one of his grandmothers recognized his writing skill during his teens. Having been orphaned at 12 years of age, he began living with his mother’s parents. He later studied Sociology and English at Brigham Young University. Sterling served as a missionary in New Zealand. Then came a year of active military service during the Berlin Crisis. Later, upon receiving a BS degree at Brigham Young University, he taught high school English in the Salt Lake area. After receiving an MSW degree at the University of Utah, he served for over thirty years as a clinical social worker and writer/editor for the Utah State Department of Health.
He was called as a member of the Bonneville Stake mission presidency. He served in subsequent years in several stake missions among diverse cultures. Among his service experience, he has been a Gospel Doctrine teacher, a High Priest Group instructor, and a High Priest Group leader. Since his retirement, he has completed a mission call at an LDS Employment Resource Center assisting a widely diverse patronage in personal resume writing. He then served a local service mission in the LDS Family Services Addiction Recovery Program. He is currently enjoying serving in nearby temples.
He has had a life-long drive in recording beautiful and meaningful quotes, poems and scriptures which have helped mold his writing interests and have subsequently found their way into a few books in his retirement years. He has a love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but in his concern over the national decline in scripture reading, and the fact that the general reading skill is below the junior high school level, he has had increased focus on and has spent decades in making scripture reading much more clear and easy for youth as well as mature readers, while maintaining the integrity of the original texts.
Sterling’s rather palpable love of people, nature, adventure, music and literature is reflected in his writing. He is the father of five grown children, and is currently residing in Salt Lake City with his wife and their aged cat.
